Contact dermatitis is a type of eczema and is characterised by itchy, blistered, dry and cracked skin. The reaction usually occurs within a few hours or days of exposure to the allergen. Symptoms can affect any part of the body but most commonly the hands and face.
Usually, if repeated exposure to the allergen is avoided, symptoms will clear up within a few days or weeks. However, some people experience severe and long-lasting symptoms, which may affect their quality of life. Occasionally, areas of the skin affected can become infected; in these cases, seek medical advice immediately.
